I just picked up this news from The Star.

PUTRAJAYA: Khong Guan and Khian Guan brand biscuits have been found to contain excessive levels of melamine.
Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said 18 out of the 47 products produced by the two manufacturers contained more than the permissible level of malamine, which is 2.5mg/kg or 2.5 parts per million (ppm).
He said the manufacturers had been instructed to recall all 18 biscuit products from the market.
“We have also requested that they voluntarily recall the rest of the products (the remaining 29),” he said.

However, the problem is, I cannot find what are the brands of biscuits from Khong Guan and Khian Guan. Both of these names are very much part of our lives as they are the earliest biscuits manufacturers.
I think our Health Ministry should at least give us some photos and names of the biscuits that contain melamine instead of vague news like this.
A search on the internet found there are two different producers of Khong Guan biscuits. One plant is in Singapore which uses Australian milk and another in Indonesia which uses China imports.
However, checks with the Khong Guan head office in Singapore showed that there were two separate biscuit manufacturers using the Khong Guan name.
“The company in Singapore is a totally different entity from the one in Indonesia,” said a company representative.
She also confirmed that the products made by Khong Guan Singapore used Australian milk and not Chinese dairy sources.

Therefore, let’s open our eyes bigger when we go shopping for our supplies of biscuits. I had rummaged through my larder and did not find any Khong Guan biscuits.
