PAS urges police to come clean over weapons 'discovery'

KUALA LUMPUR, Jul 8: PAS has urged for a thorough investigation into the 'discovery' of weapons at several spots in the city centre which the police blamed on Bersih supporters planning together tomorrow at Stadium Merdeka.

Central committee member Mazlan Aliman, lodging a police report on the matter against Selangor police chief Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah and Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Amar Singh for making the allegation, said the people doubted the police claims.

“The discovery of the weapon like a machete which is spanking new and Bersih T-shirts is very dubious and raises questions," he said at the Shah Alam police station accompanied by several PAS Youth leaders.

Tun Hisan had claimed that five bags containing 20 cleavers and 36 wick-capped bottles filled with petrol were hidden between rocks at the back of a temple at Batu 14 in Jalan Lama Gombak Bentong. According to him, the weapons were uncovered at 7.20pm following a tip-off from an Orang Asli.

Amar Singh meanwhile claimed that the police discovered weapons comprising of eight molotov cocktails, 43 firecrackers, three parang and a knife together with three Bersih T-shirts hidden near decorative flower pots at Pertama Complex, Wisma Bumi Raya and Sogo Shopping Complex in the city.

Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Dr Wong Chin Huat strongly rejected the accusation linking the coalition to terrorist activities.

"Bersih will never resort to terror tactics. We have said from the beginning that our gathering will be a peaceful one, no matter where it is held,” said Wong, who did not rule out that the Bersih T-shirts were planted by mischief-makers.

Mazlan urged police to find out why the discovery was made public.

"The police must play their original real role to protect the people as a whole without being stooge to any parties. The dirty tactics like May 13th, Memali and Operasi Lalang are outdated and disgusting,” he added.

Mazlan also declared his support to the Agong’s recent call on all parties to exercise restraint and engage with each other.
