SHAH ALAM, Jul 8: Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has written to the Agong proposing that the latter calls for a referendum to find out the people's view on free and fair elections.
"The letter has been sent to Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong this afternoon," said a statement from the MB's press secretariat.
In the letter, Khalid (pic) also praised the Agong's earlier statement expressing concern over developments in the run-up to the Bersih rally, and said he was grateful over the Agong's readiness to meet Bersih leaders earlier this week.
"The defects and manipulation in the electoral process is public knowledge, and has been well published in the print and electronic media, online media and blogs," Khalid wrote.
Khalid said the memorandum to be handed over to the Agong tomorrow consists of eight demands by Bersih.
Bersih's eight demands include a call for the total revamp on the controversial postal votes system, the use of indelible ink, a minimum campaign period of 21 days, an open-minded mainstream and broadcast media, reform of public institutions including the police and Attorney General's Chambers, eradication of corruption and vote buying practices, and a stop on "gutter politics".
