PAS Merlimau election chief Datuk Halim Abdul Rahman has accused Barisan Nasional (BN) of paying 750 students to become phantom voters in tomorrow’s by-election here. The Pengkalan Chepa MP told The Malaysian Insider that students have been offered a reward to vote by using identity cards of registered voters in Merlimau.
“We have received information about students that have been paid by BN to vote in the by-election. These are students are from here (Merlimau).
“I have also received information that the students have been offered rewards to become voters and about 750 students will vote representing voters in Merlimau,” he said.
Merlimau is home to a polytechnic with over 5,000 students.
He added that others have also been offered to become phantom voters by BN.
Halim said the phantom voters were to cast their ballots in all voting districts but could not reveal the amount of reward offered.
The Merlimau state seat has seven voting districts: Ayer Merbau, Chinchin, Jasin Lalang, Merlimau Utara, Merlimau Pasir, Permatang Serai and Pengakalan Samak.
The by-election will be a straight fight between PAS’s Yuhaizat Abdullah and Umno’s Roslan Ahmad.
BN currently controls 23 of the state assembly seats, while DAP is the only opposition with five.
The late Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasson retained the Merlimau state seat in the last general election after he defeated PAS’s Jasme Tompang by a majority of 2,154 votes. In Election 2004, he won the seat by 5,087 votes.
Merlimau is located within the Jasin parliamentary constituency, a stronghold of BN, which won all the five state seats in Election 2008.
