Bersih's compromise: Rally at Merdeka Stadium

Harakahdaily

KUALA LUMPUR, Jul 6: Electoral reforms coalition Bersih, which accepted an offer by prime minister Najib Razak to move its July 9 rally to a stadium, decided today to hold the gathering at the historic Stadium Merdeka (pic) in Kuala Lumpur.

At a press conference announcing the decision, the Bersih committee said the choice was due to the stadium's central location making it easily accessible for those who have been planning to attend the July 9 rally.

Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan also informed that its memorandum to the Agong would be delivered by a small group of some ten people representing various NGOs, without the involvement of political party leaders or being accompanied by any huge crowd.

The move is seen as a compromise following Bersih's audience with the Agong yesterday at the National Palace.

It now remains to be seen whether Najib would make good his pledge to allow Bersih have its rally without any disturbances.

Stadium Merdeka, completed in time for Malaysia's declaration of independence in August 1957, is privately operated by Perbadanan Stadium Merdeka. It underwent a face lift in 2009.
