Wall-to-wall coverage as Mubarak resigns

2 hrs 21 mins ago

Cable news went wall-to-wall with special reports and broadcasters broke into their daytime programming as crowds in Egypt erupted following the 11 a.m. EST Friday announcement that embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has resigned, handing over power to the Egyptian army.

Vice President Omar Suleiman made the announcement on Egyptian state TV, as seen in the image above. You can follow along over at Al Jazeera English's livestream, which went from the news of Mubarak's ouster to extended coverage of jubilant protesters celebrating in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC briefly interrupted their normal programming with Egypt coverage following the announcement. Cable news, as expected, stayed with the story. Jon Scott was anchoring Fox News with reporting on the ground from Dominc Di-Natale; Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blitzer were anchoring CNN with reporting from Nic Robertson; and Chris Matthews and Brian Williams were anchoring MSNBC with reporting from Richard Engel of NBC News.

By 11:30 a.m., Mubarak's resignation dominated the homepage of all major news websites. Some screenshots of the coverage are below.
